INDUSTRIES

Social Insurance

Social Insurance in Australia plays a critical role in providing financial support designed to protect individuals from economic risks associated with life events such as retirement, unemployment, illness, injury or disability.

It is funded through mandatory contributions, often from employers, employees, and sometimes the government, into a common fund. It is a highly regulated industry where each scheme operates under a different set of legislation.
Common priorities for Social Insurers including ensuring equity of access to support, effective service delivery to best serve the interests participants, upholding of complex legislative requirements, operational performance to manage risks and the unfunded liability, stakeholder and provider management, and much more.
"Our Purpose at Scyne is to transform social insurers into high-performing, data-driven organisations by uniting actuarial insights with modern digital capabilities implemented safely and securely – so Social Insurers can deliver faster, fairer, sustainable and more reliable outcomes to injured workers and employers."
Mark Stewart | Social Insurance Lead | 0400 000 000

The industry is facing significant challenges including:

  • Social insurers traditionally have significant "people heavy" regulation, contribution and claims processes that are often inefficient.
  • They rely on claims managers, either in-house or provided by claims agents, to correspond with claimants (and employers in the case of workers compensation), manually enter details, track progress etc. This is difficult, often unrewarding work and the industry experiences high staff turnover.
  • There is significant data required to support the claims management lifecycle and calculation of mandatory contributions, but it is often poorly structured and underutilised.
  • Most of the core business systems are on-premise, legacy tech.
  • The information processed by the insurers is personally identifiable making cyber and data security a key risk.
  • The insurers are funded by mandatory contributions and in the current economic climate claims costs are going up whilst the payers are struggling with operational inefficiencies and seeking  to minimise the unfunded liability.
Therefore, there is a strong demand for improvements inefficiency of processes and technology such as AI to reduce the costs of running a Social Insurance scheme. There is also demand for improved insights and different approaches to improve scheme performance.
